OSI LAYER 2 // Data Link Layer

Wireless Deauthentication

Wireless deauthentication abuse forces clients to leave an access point by sending management frames that appear to terminate sessions.

01 // HOW IT WORKS

Mechanism

Older or unprotected management-frame behavior can allow forged deauthentication frames. Protected Management Frames (802.11w/PMF) reduce this risk.

02 // DETECTION

Indicators to watch

Bursts of deauthentication/disassociation frames, repeated reconnects, channel-specific spikes, and client roaming anomalies.

04 // PREVENTION

Defensive controls

Enable PMF where supported, use modern Wi-Fi security, monitor wireless IDS telemetry, and investigate abnormal management-frame rates.

05 // SECURITY TOOL

Recommended security control

Wireless IDS / WIDS

Use a lab access point configured for testing.
